Microsoft Monthly Security Patches for Computers

Microsoft releases application and security patches to their software once a month.  To ensure that UPI machines receive these updates in a timely manner, with the least amount of disruption, Information Services will now start automatically installing these patches during the night with a goal of having the most current Microsoft patches applied to all desktops and laptops within the same night.

1. What will happen if I take my laptop home that night or forget to leave my machine turned on?

The next time you log in to the UPI network the patches will be installed and your machine will reboot.

No, your machine will look as it did when you left.

3. What if I am on vacation during the patching cycle?

As long as you leave your machine on, it will continue to receive the patches. Your machine will be up-to-date when you return. If you have a laptop and take it with you or your machine is turned off, the patches will install when you return and log in to the UPI network.

4. How will I know when the patches are scheduled?

A reminder email will be sent out by Information Services on the day the patching is to occur.

Please contact the UPI Help Desk and report the problem, so we can get your machine fixed as quickly as possible.

6. Why was my PC rebooted two days in a row?

Due to Microsoft’s patch requirements, multiple reboots may be required.
